The Four Corners monument, where Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico meet, is not quite where the lines were meant to cross. The surveyors who set the corner in the 1800s missed by about eighteen hundred feet, which the National Geodetic Survey worked out in 2009 after the news had briefly reported it as two and a half miles and then had to correct itself. None of it moved the border. Once a marker has been set in the ground and everyone has agreed to it, the marker is the line, and all four states have long since written that into their laws. So the people who kneel on the plaque with a hand and a foot in each state are exactly right. The only thing that was ever wrong was the description it was built from.
