Thoughts, no. 173

The Welsh village with the famously long name, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, had a much shorter one until the 1860s. Llanfairpwllgwyngyll already said plenty: St Mary’s church in the hollow of the white hazel. The rest, near a rapid whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio of the red cave, was added around the time the railway came through, apparently so the station could claim the longest name in Britain and get people off the train. It worked, and it still does; visitors photograph the sign. The people who live there mostly call it Llanfairpwll, or Llanfair PG. The long name was made for strangers, and it is mostly strangers who use it.
