Almost nobody likes hearing their own voice on a recording, and there is a plain reason for it. When you speak you hear yourself two ways at once: through the air, like everyone else, and through the bones of your own skull, which carry the low notes especially well. A recording gives you only the air, so it sounds thinner and higher than the voice you have lived inside all your life. That means the voice you wince at is the closer likeness. It is the one your friends have been hearing all along, and they kept calling anyway.
