On a Monday morning it helps to know that the first deadline was an actual line: a wooden rail about twenty feet inside the stockade of the Confederate prison at Andersonville, written up in an inspection report in May 1864, and a prisoner who crossed it was shot. By about 1920 newspapers had borrowed the word for the hour the copy had to be in, and somewhere between the two it stopped killing anyone and only kept the feeling.
