The last leap second was added at the end of 2016, and there may never be another. In 2022 the people who keep the world’s time voted to stop nudging atomic clocks back into step with the turning Earth by 2035, and to let the two drift further apart than the 0.9 seconds they have been allowed since 1972. Lately the Earth has been spinning a touch fast, so the next correction might have had to be the first second ever taken away rather than added; it seems we would rather stop keeping score than find out what a minute with fifty-nine seconds breaks.
