The straight quotation mark is a typewriter’s economy. There wasn’t room on the machine for an opening and a closing mark, so one key did both jobs, and nobody could tell which way a sentence was facing. Computers inherited the shortage long after the room came back. This house sets its thoughts in curly quotes now, which seems to me less like decoration than like handing back a key that was only ever borrowed.
