Thoughts, no. 86

When someone gives you directions and finishes with “you can’t miss it”, they are telling you something true about themselves, not about the turning. They have driven past it twice a day for eleven years; they could not miss it now if they tried. What they are describing is a gate that lives in their memory, sharp and lit and obvious, and what you will be looking for is a grey gate among other grey gates in the rain. Nobody ever says “it’s easy to miss”, though it would be the kinder sentence, and you would find it first time.
