A clue was once a ball of thread, a clew, and the sense we use now comes from one in particular: the one Ariadne gave Theseus to unwind behind him into the labyrinth. Which means a clue was never meant to tell you where the answer is. It was meant to tell you how you got here, so that whatever you found in the middle, you could find your way back out.
